Origin & history
Native to the forests of Siberia and northeastern Asia; kept as a pet in Europe since the 1980s, now classified as an invasive species in some regions due to escaped animals.
Care
Needs a large aviary with plenty of climbing options, as it's very active. Not suited for handling - tends to remain shy.
Ideal environment
Needs a large outdoor aviary with retreat options for hibernation. Best kept in pairs or small groups.
Feeding
Omnivorous: seeds and nuts as the base, supplemented with fruit, vegetables, and occasional insects.
Health
Prone to dental problems (chew material needed) and stress in an overly small enclosure. Hibernates, so special overwintering conditions are needed.
