African Pygmy Hedgehog
Small, nocturnal spiny hedgehog, permitted as a pet in Switzerland only with a cantonal permit.
Origin & history
Native to the savannas of Central and East Africa; bred as a pet in North America since the 1990s, keeping is restricted and permit-required in Switzerland due to animal welfare concerns.
Care
Needs a large enclosure with a heat source (24-27°C, very cold-sensitive) and a wheel for enrichment. Trim claws regularly.
Ideal environment
Needs constant warmth without drafts, solitary housing (hedgehogs are loners). Nocturnal, a dark retreat spot during the day is important.
Feeding
Omnivorous: special hedgehog food or high-quality cat food, supplemented with insects - strict calorie control important due to obesity risk.
Health
Prone to obesity and dental problems, as well as mite infestation of the quills. Regular checkups with an exotics-experienced vet are important.
