Haflinger
Sturdy, golden-colored mountain horse with a flaxen mane and tail, known for its friendly, people-oriented temperament.
Origin & history
Named after the village of Hafling in South Tyrol, where the breed was developed in the 19th century from local mountain horses and Oriental thoroughbreds to create a sure-footed pack and riding horse for the Alps.
Care
Needs regular exercise but is low-maintenance and undemanding. Mane and tail need a bit more grooming due to their light color.
Ideal environment
Very weather-hardy and ideal for mountain and alpine terrain, tolerates the Swiss climate excellently. Needs pasture time and social contact.
Feeding
Undemanding: hay and lean pasture as the base, little concentrate feed - watch for weight gain due to laminitis risk.
Health
A robust breed, but like many hardy horse breeds, prone to obesity and the resulting laminitis on overly rich feed.
