Guppy
Small, colorful, and extremely undemanding livebearer, ideal for beginner aquariums.
Origin & history
Native to the freshwater streams of Venezuela, Trinidad, and nearby Caribbean islands; named after its discoverer Robert John Lechmere Guppy and spread worldwide as an aquarium fish since the early 20th century.
Care
Needs a tank from 54 liters up with plants as a refuge for fry. Breeds very quickly - keep an eye on population size.
Ideal environment
Warm-water tank (22-28°C) with dense planting. Sociable, best kept in groups with more females than males.
Feeding
Omnivorous: flake food as a base, supplemented with live food like brine shrimp for color and vitality.
Health
Prone to "guppy killer" disease (ichthyophonosis) and other fungal illnesses from stress or poor water quality. More tolerant of water fluctuations than many other ornamental fish.
