Origin & history

Descended from the European polecat, domesticated for over 2000 years for rabbit hunting; today kept mainly as a playful pet.

Care

Needs daily free-roam time in a ferret-proofed space (secure holes/cables) and a large multi-level cage. Check ears regularly for mites.

Ideal environment

Needs plenty of space to explore and climb, keep at least in pairs since they're very social. Apartment living possible with sufficient free-roam time.

Feeding

Strict carnivore: high-quality ferret or cat food with a high meat content, no dry food high in grain.

Health

Prone to adrenal disease and insulinoma, especially with improper feeding. Neutering/spaying is often recommended for health reasons.
