Freiberger (Franches-Montagnes)
The only native Swiss horse breed still in existence, sturdy, versatile, and known for its calm temperament.
Origin & history
Bred in the Franches-Montagnes region of canton Jura in the 19th century from local horses and Anglo-Norman stock to create a sturdy work and carriage horse for agriculture; today the last remaining independent Swiss horse breed.
Care
Needs regular exercise and activity, but is undemanding in feeding. Groom coat and hooves regularly like any horse.
Ideal environment
Needs pasture time and social contact with other horses, ideally in open stabling. Well suited to the climate of the Swiss Plateau and Jura.
Feeding
Roughage (hay, pasture grass) as the base, little concentrate feed needed as an undemanding breed - watch for weight gain.
Health
A hardy, resilient breed with few breed-typical conditions. Regular hoof care and dental checks are important.
