Chinchilla
Nocturnal rodent with the densest fur of any land mammal, needs special care and a quiet environment.
Origin & history
Native to the Chilean Andes, where it lives at high altitude in sparse, cool rocky regions; nearly hunted to extinction for its dense fur, also bred as a pet since the early 20th century.
Care
Needs a daily dust bath for coat care (no water!) and a large, tall cage with multiple levels. Very temperature-sensitive, no heat above 25°C.
Ideal environment
Needs a cool, quiet environment (15-21°C ideal), no direct sunlight. Nocturnal - quiet during the day is important. Do not keep alone.
Feeding
Strictly herbivorous: mainly hay, supplemented with special chinchilla food - very sensitive to fat- or sugar-rich diets.
Health
Prone to heatstroke in overly warm surroundings and dental problems since teeth grow continuously. Needs constant access to chew material.
