Origin & history
Despite the name, developed in the USA, likely from Basque herding dogs that arrived via Australia; became popular as a ranch working dog.
Care
Needs a lot of daily exercise and mental stimulation, or tends toward behavioral problems. Brush the coat 1-2 times a week.
Ideal environment
Best suited to active households with a garden or access to plenty of exercise; apartment living only works with a very large amount of activity.
Feeding
Activity-matched, high-quality food due to high energy expenditure during work and sport.
Health
Should be tested for the MDR1 gene defect (drug sensitivity) and hip dysplasia.
